In Lesson 10 of my Professor Jason Jump Start Brazilian Portuguese series I talk more about the importance of learning verbs as vocabulary – focusing on their meanings and uses more than on their forms. In this lesson, I cover 20 additional common verbs used to talk about everyday activities. Forms are given for the present, simple past and periphrastic (going to) future, but the emphasis is on each verb’s meanings and uses. I also provide some set phrases and idiomatic expressions for each. This is a lengthy lesson, so here is a list of the verbs in order, in case you’re looking for something in particular! 1. Ser 2. Estar 3. Haver 4. Ter 5. Fazer 6. Ir 7. Querer 8. Poder 9. Dar 10. Deixar 11. Dizer 12. Ficar 13. Gostar 14. Pôr 15. Precisar 16. Ver 17. Vir 18. Saber 19. Conhecer 20. Conseguir
Major General Taur Matan Ruak interviewed in Metinaro last week speak out aggressively against the ongoing use of Portuguese in Timor-Leste' courts. Claiming that common Timorese who find accused cannot understand the charges, processes, verdicts and sentencing. He states that every international staff in the court system should either learn Tetun or leave the country. In 2001 the Constituent Assemby adopted Portuguese as an official language in what was a generally unpopular decision as the vast majority of Timorese do not speak, understand or read Portuguese.

Although Portuguese & Spanish may be similar, there is definitely a BIG difference in pronunciation. We put some of our in-house Spanish speakers to the test, did they pass or #FAIL? Olá! Eu conto os números de um à vinte em português. Hello! I'm counting from 1 to 20 in Portuguese. Please feel free to comment and correct anything to improve my pronunciation. (: I've never taken a course, just a bit of self-study. I know there are many dialects of Portuguese, and the pronunciation only represents one of them. I'm aware that my pronunciation of 1 wasn't [u] enough, it was kinda more [o]-ish. And my 16 should have ended in a sh sound (IPA symbol ʃ ), but I said [s]. The symbols within the square brackets [ ] is the pronunciation as indicated by the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). It's a standarized system of phonetic notation that linguists use, associating one sound with one graph (letter). Once you know the IPA, you should be able to pronounce any sound in any language! I'd be happy to explain any of the symbols. Information is also available on the wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ipa
